The English Premier League
This article is geared toward those who are new to what the English Premier League is and what it’s all about. The English Premier League is the professional football league of England. It began in the early 1990s and is also known as the Premiership. The League consists of 20 teams, also known as clubs, and they play 38 matches each throughout the season. August is the beginning of the season which ends in May the following year.
Barclays Bank, one of the largest in the UK, sponsors the Premier League which plays most of its games over the weekend with the occasional game played during the week. Ultimately, the English Premier League formed into the FA Premier League in 1992. Today, the Premier League is the most watched sporting league in the world. It is also the richest league with revenues soaring to nearly £2 billion between 2007 and 2008.
The Premier League is watched the world over for a very good reason, that English clubs rank very highly in European competitions, even ahead of Spain and Italy’s leagues. There have been many English football clubs that have competed in the Premier League but only 4 have actually taken home the title of champion. Among these teams are Manchester United, Chelsea FC, Arsenal FC and Blackburn Rovers.
Of these champions, Manchester United has the most wins with their 11th victory coming in the 2008-2009 season. Man United’s closest rival, Liverpool Football Club has never won the Premier League since its current formation in 1992.
